Background

Chomsky wrote his first article at age 10 - a discussion of the threat of the spread of fascism. He started studying philosophy and language and has become a member of staff at M.I.T. since 1955.

Chomsky became famous for his work in linguistics - especially related to the learning of language. His ideas are at the core of studying the way children learn languages. His work has been overshadowed by his outspoken political identity. Chomsky is a critic of many foreign policies, especially those of the United States. He was one of the first opponents of the Vietnam War and continues to be critical of wars globally. His efforts to expose flaws in logic and decisions have helped keep nations wary of his voice.
