Winston Churchill

Origin: Woodstock, England
(November 30, 1874 - January 24, 1965)

Heroic Values: Achievement, Courage, Perseverance, Vision, Wisdom

Background

Winston Churchill began life in boarding schools due to being born into an uperclass family. He spent some time in the army, followed by journalistic endeavours, and finally ended up in politics. He became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 1940 at the beginning of World War 2.

Churchill spent much of his time as a politician making enemies and changing parties. He made plenty of mistakes, but was also visionary in other times. He was played a large part in the mistakes of Gallipoli during World War 1 and labeled Mahatma Gandhi a "half-naked fakir". His ascent to hero status came during World War 2 though and it is for that he is remembered. He refused to capitulate to Hitler and inspired a country with many famous speeches, including "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few". His leadership and work with the Allies during the war are seen as direct reasons for the winning of the war.

Churchill was also a keen writer and painter throughout his life. In 1953 he won the Nobel Prize in Literature for his historical writings. He won many other awards and recognitions during his life, including honorary citizenship of the United States of America.
