Galahad

Origin: Arthurian Legend

Heroic Values: Achievement, Caring, Courage, Faith, Integrity, Perseverance, Selflessness, Tolerance, Vision, Wisdom

Background

Galahad was the son of Lancelot and Elaine. Elaine had used magic to trick Lancelot into thinking she was Guinevere, so once Lancelot learned this he left her. Galahad was sent to grow up in an abbey where his great aunt was the abbess.

Merlin prophesied that Galahad would become an even better knight than Lancelot and it came to be true. When Galahad was old enough to leave the abbey, he rejoined his father at Camelot. He came upon a sword in a stone and was able to pull it out, just like Arthur had many years earlier. After completing this amazing task he was invited to become a Knight of the Round Table. At the first gathering around the table, Galahad unknowingly sat in the Siege Perilous. This seat was reserved for the knight who would find the Holy Grail - all others who had sat at it had died. Galahad survived. He was later sent to recover the Holy Grail, along with Perceval and Bors. He found the Grail and then asked John of Arimathea to be allowed into Heaven.

Galahad was successful in his search for the Grail because he was the best of knights. His perfection as a knight is frequently mentioned. It comes from courage, chivalry, faith, and commitment.
