Martin Luther King, JrOrigin: Atlanta, Georgia Heroic Values: Achievement, Caring, Courage, Faith, Humility, Integrity, Perseverance, Selflessness, Tolerance, Vision, Wisdom |
BackgroundMartin Luther King, Jr. is famous world-wide for his promotion of racial tolerance and committment to non-violent solutions. His "I Have a Dream" speech has perhaps become as famous as the man himself. He was assassinated in 1968 shortly after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. King began his life of crusading shortly after he became pastor of one of the most distinguished churches in Alabama. He was involved in the bus boycott that began with the arrest of Rosa Parks in Montgomery, Alabama. Following this he hekped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference that used the methods made famous by Mahatma Gandhi of nonviolent civil disobedience. The Civil Rights Movement became a political juggernaut in the 1960s and King was leading the way, organizing marches and making speeches. The most famous of these marches was the March on Washington in 1963. It was at this march - the biggest ever on Washington at that time - that King made his most famous speech. King was a strong believer in the nonviolence philosophy, even cancelling marches that he thought may turn violent. He is remembered for his vision, his perseverance in his cause, and for his courage to speak his mind. |
