The Mundane World

Yul is a Jamaican sprinter. He wants to get off the island as quick as possible and sees the Olympics as that ticket out. While in the qualifying rounds for the Olympics, he is tripped by Junior Bevil along with Derice Bannock, ruining his chances of making it to the Olympics as a sprinter.

The Call To Adventure

Derice calls for everyone on the island to help him get to the Olympics as the first Jamaican bobsledder. Yul goes to the meeting to see that nobody but Derice, Sanka, and Junior are interested.

Crossing The Threshold

Although initially reluctant, going to the Olympics as a bobsledder might give him the opportunity to get off the island. He accepts and starts training with Derice, Sanka, and Junior.

The Path of Trials

Yul, along with the other members of the team, needs to first learn how to bobsled. The team learns from an old coach named Irving Blitzer. Getting the money to join the Olympics is also a difficult task.

When they finally get there, Yul and his teammates have to deal with the fact that nobody wants them there and that the governing board of the Olympics don’t like his coach.

Finally, Yul and his teammates get in an accident on the bobsledding course on their last trial. They all help pick up the sled and even though they are out of medal contention, they finish the race and gain the respect they deserve.

Master of Two Worlds

Before he left the island, Yul was very angry and didn’t appreciate his home country. He didn’t like his teammates. After finishing his journey, he respects and even has a great friendship with Sanka, Derice, and Junior. He also gains a newfound pride in his home country. Yul is a much better person after learning how to be true to himself and to not let other people who do not like him bring him down.
