Samwise GamgeeThe Mundane WorldSam begins his story as a gardener in the Shire. He is the son of a gardener and has no thoughts of ever doing anything else in his life. He is good friends with Frodo Baggins. The Call To AdventureOne day he hears Frodo talking to the wizard, Gandalf, about a magical ring that has a destiny. He hears that Frodo intends to take the ring out of the Shire. Sam intends to ensure Frodo is kept safe. Crossing The ThresholdAs Sam and Frodo are leaving the Shire, they come to a point where Sam asks Frodo to stop. He points out that he has never been further away from home than this point. It is at this point that he leaves the safety of the Shire and embarks on the Path of Trials. The Path of TrialsSam's journey to Mordor where he and Frodo must take the Ring is ful of trials. His courage, love, selflessness, and responsibility are key to the success of the pair's quest. He survives physical hardship, overcomes grief when he believes Frodo is killed by Shelob, learns to ignore jealousy when Gollum wins Frodo's trust, and finally learns pity from Frodo and decides not to kill Gollum when presented the chance. Master of Two WorldsSam returns to the Shire a hero, having helped save Middle Earth, but one of the final battles of the War of the Ring is in the Shire itself. Defeating Saruman and replanting the Shire shows Sam as the Master of Two Worlds. He became mayor and and a father. |
