Ofelia

The Mundane World

Ofelia begins the story traveling through Spain to a Fascist stronghold with her mother and step-father.

The Call To Adventure

On the way she sees a flying insect that later turns out to be a fairy. The fairy is the signal that there is another world just around the corner.

Crossing The Threshold

The fairy leads Ofelia to the labyrinth where she finds the staircase to the world below. The labryinth is her threshold - once she crosses it she can't go back.

The Path of Trials

The faun sets three tasks for Ofelia. The first tests her willingness to believe in this other world. The second tests her obedience. The third challenges tests her willingness to protect an innocent and her calls for self-sacrifice. These tests, often mirrored in the "real" world, determine whether Ofelia is truly a hero.

Master of Two Worlds

Ofelia finishes the story as the princess in the fairy world and as a self-sacrificing hero in the real world. She truly mastered both worlds.
