Summer Camp Programs"It was amazing to me how The Hero Workshop made me feel like I could start my own journey as someone else's hero, really make a difference in the lives of the children I was working with." - Phillip Bergquist "The Hero workshop got me to open my eyes to who my true hero is, to understand that a hero is distinguished by exceptional courage and nobility and strength. It's the small things my hero did for me throughout my life that I never acknowleged. Knowing this now makes me want to educate in the same way my hero educated me." - Joelle Mutombo "After hearing all the "do"s and "do not"s about camping during staff training, I was feeling quite overwhelmed. Langdon's closing session, The Hero Workshop, really revived my hope for the summer. It gave me some perspective on the experience and gave me motivation to go out into that new world, conquer the obstacles, and return home a changed person, a hero." - Hannah Hudson "The Hero Workshop has helped me both in the camp setting and at college being a Resident Adviser. I would HIGHLY recommend that every camp and every school district listen to Matt's presentation and take it to heart." - Steven Garelik

The Hero's Journey. It is a simple idea, but leads one to truly understand their role as a camp counselor. Going in to the summer of 2006, I was not sure what I was getting myself into by signing on as a resident camp counselor. I had never been to camp as a child and knew nothing of what went on at a camp. Upon arriving we were greeted by people dressed up in random costumes who eventually talked about their heroes and why they decided to dress up in this manner. The explanation of what a true hero is throughout the training was something that made it clear what was expected of me and it also made me truly excited and passionate about the opportunity to be a hero for numerous kids throughout the summer. It also made me realize how much of a responsibility it is to be a child's hero. Realizing this responsibility made me think about all of my actions throughout the summer as I went on to be counseled by Matt on how to be a better counselor all the time, and with training by him, we had an amazing summer and staff. - Richard Engelman "As a new counselor in the world of summer camps, you find yourself confused, worried, and young. I remember thinking, how am I going to counsel kids that are only a year or two younger than me. How could I make a difference as a mentor figure, while still being a friend? This is where Matt came riding in to save my summer. The Hero Workshop theme and way of living gives strength |
"Hearing the hero's journey put my previous summer in perspective and motivated me to look for ways to be a good leader in my second. I listened more and led by example. I was frustrated easily my second summer because I was tired and nothing seemed new the second time around, but I kept my focus and sanity largely because I saw how I was someone my campers looked up to. I took character development and evening embers to new heights because I found a potential to impact campers that I glanced over the year before. I don't think I could have pushed through my second summer without having realized through hearing Matt that I was a hero because when my patience grew thin I saw that I had people around me to help me in my "trials" and understood I was making lasting impacts on many kids each week. It's pretty wonderful to learn that you are a hero to someone and overwhelming to find that you are being paid to be one to hundreds of kids every week. When I looked around me my second summer, I felt I had a better understanding of my role and as if I were looking with different glasses I came to shift my focus from myself to the small acts that put smiles on camper's faces. As wonderful as my first summer was, I don't think I could have anything like that again because I'm wiser now. I think seeing my self as a hero in my second summer was a huge part of growing up and becoming responsible. I honestly thought about the presentation during my toughest week and reflected on it throughout the summer. When I thought I was going to give up, I got a letter saying I was a hero to my camper. That was solid, tangible proof. It was a tremendous help and restoring power, but I think I was content to just be myself and act in a way that was positive for my campers to follow throughout my second summer." - Katie Field |
